Fill in any two of the before-tax price, the sales tax rate and the after-tax price, and the calculator finds the third.
General state rates, and the highest combined rate once local and city taxes are added. Press a state's rate to use it in the calculator above. Rates change and some goods are taxed differently, so confirm the rate for your exact location.

Sales tax is a consumption tax collected by the seller at the time of purchase and passed on to the government. In the United States there is no federal sales tax. States set their own, and counties and cities often add more, so the rate depends on where you buy. Five states have no statewide sales tax: Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and Oregon, though Alaska allows local taxes. Most other countries use a value-added tax or goods and services tax instead, which works differently but is calculated with the same percentage arithmetic.
The three numbers are linked by one formula: the after-tax price equals the before-tax price multiplied by one plus the rate. Knowing any two lets you solve for the third. Use the before-tax price and the rate to find what you will pay at the register. Use the after-tax total and the rate to take the tax back out, for example to find the pre-tax price on a receipt. Use the two prices to discover what rate was charged. Entering all three fills the answer from the first two, so clear one box to solve for it.
In the United States you can deduct either state and local income taxes or state and local sales taxes on your federal return, but not both, and only if you itemize deductions. Most people deduct income taxes because the amount is usually larger. Someone who made large purchases in a year, such as a car, may come out ahead by deducting sales tax instead. This calculator can help you work out the tax on a single purchase, but it does not prepare a tax deduction.
Multiply the before-tax price by one plus the tax rate as a decimal. For a 6.5% rate that means multiplying by 1.065, so a $100 item costs $106.50. The calculator does this when you enter the before-tax price and the rate.
Divide the after-tax total by one plus the tax rate as a decimal. If a receipt shows $106.50 and the rate is 6.5%, divide by 1.065 to get the $100 before-tax price. Enter the rate and the after-tax price, and leave the before-tax box empty.
Enter the before-tax price and the after-tax price, and leave the rate empty. The calculator divides the after-tax price by the before-tax price, subtracts one, and shows the result as a percentage.
Many counties and cities add their own sales tax on top of the state rate. The combined rate you pay depends on where the sale happens, so check the rate for your exact location.
The arithmetic is the same, but VAT and GST are charged at each stage of production and are usually included in the displayed price, while U.S. sales tax is added at the register. You can still use this calculator for VAT by entering the VAT rate as the tax rate.
