A+ = 4.3, A = 4, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1, D- = 0.7, F = 0. Each course's grade points (grade value × credits) are summed and divided by total credits to get GPA — so a 4-credit course affects your GPA twice as much as a 2-credit one.
It solves for the GPA you'd need across your remaining credits so that, combined with your current GPA and credits, the overall average reaches your target. If the required GPA comes out above 4.3, the target isn't reachable with a standard scale in the credits you have left.
Leave those courses out of the GPA calculation — pass/fail grades typically don't count toward GPA at most schools.
